These are some of the choicest recordings in the classical catalog, featuring many wonderful works you may not know, performed in exquisite fashion. Here are a dozen top picks at 3 for $30* to whet your appetite:

Handel: 10 Overtures / Leppard, English CO
This disc has more of the unusual than you expect. The playing is delightfully buoyant throughout and consistently compelling.

Poulenc: Piano Concertos, Aubade / Le Sage, Braley
Without doubt, this release is the finest single disc of Poulenc concertos available, better even than the composer's recordings, and that's saying a lot.

Light's Glittering Morn - A Musical Celebration
An unqualified gem. If you are a choral music fan and somehow missed its initial release, you will be truly gladdened and uplifted by this well-produced and superbly sung program, recorded at Washington National Cathedral.

Terpsichore - Renaissance & Early Baroque Dance Music
An imaginatively constructed cavalcade of short pieces performed by players who are masters of their early instruments, in first-rate sound.

Hummel: Piano Trios / Beaux Arts Trio
Delightful, intelligent, and witty performances of some very attractive music. The variety of Hummel's invention is remarkable.

Ketelbey: In a Monastery Garden / Lanchbery
John Lanchbery never made a finer record. This is deluxe Ketèlbey, with chorus, organ, exotic percussion, vocal soloists, sound effects – the whole works. It sounds wonderfully decadent and nostalgic, the luscious strings richly caressing those sumptuous melodies.

Scarlatti: Sonatas / Alexis Weissenberg
The ultimate shaker and mover of pianists, Weissenberg’s Scarlatti is superb.

Rossini: Cantatas Vol 2 / Bartoli, Florez, Chailly
Chailly produces playing of tremendous warmth, wit, and urgency. The soloists are exceptional. Flórez is heroic, his tone flexible and honeyed, every syllable and note distinct. Cecilia Bartoli is, as usual, wondrous, the accuracy, agility, range, and speed of her coloratura astonishing.

Bruckner: Symphony No 7 / Haitink, Concertgebouw
The playing of the Concertgebouw is gorgeous; the strings glow, the brass are ideally balanced, and Haitink paces each movement to perfection.

Dohnanyi: Piano Quintet No 1, Sextet / Schiff, Takacs
One of the most enjoyable chamber music recitals in the catalog.

Purcell: Overtures / Thomas, Bournemouth Sinfonietta
A disc of Purcell overtures is a good idea – full as it is of enjoyable and consistently interesting music.

Mozart: Piano Concertos No 20 & 24 / Brendel, Mackerras
Brendel's articulation, timing, and expressive economy fill each phrase with inspired life. Sir Charles Mackerras's astonishing conducting reveals the full measure of Mozart's brilliance as an orchestrator.
