ArkivMusic Newsletter

Dear ArkivMusic Customer,

Have you ever heard a wonderful piece of music on the radio and then tried to track down a copy on CD?

ArkivMusic works with most classical radio stations in the U.S. to help with that search. But early on, we realized that many of those recordings (over half) are actually out of print.

So some years ago we started our ArkivCD program – now with nearly 11,000 titles – to keep this music available. This month every one of those titles is on sale. Here are just a few of our featured ArkivMusic reissues:

Bach: Keyboard Concertos BWV 1052-1058 / András Schiff
András Schiff is a true master, and the Bach Concerto recordings with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, led by Schiff himself, exemplify this and count as essential listening. (2 CDs)

The Unknown Kurt Weill / Teresa Stratas
A landmark recording that blends theatrical spunk with classical vocalism.

Orient Express / I Salonisti
A CD that entertains hugely as it captures the romance of a great journey, from the Italy of Rota to the Orient of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

The Last Dance - Music for a Vanishing Era / I Salonisti
Visit the Palm Court Orchestra of the great ocean liners of the last century. The music is romantic without being sentimental, colorful but never flamboyant.

Play Ball! / Kunzel, Cincinnati Pops
Erich Kunzel reaches for a clutch of film scores, pop songs, and assorted memorabilia to create a charming and eccentric ode to baseball.

Bloch: Concerti Grossi 1 & 2, Schelomo / Hanson
Bloch's Concerti Grossi are masterfully wrought, balancing vigorous Baroque counterpoint with a lovely, romantic warmth.

Shadow Dances - Stravinsky: Miniatures / Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
This collection brings together many of Stravinsky's short gems, with the considerable bonus that they receive lively interpretations by one of the world's best chamber ensembles.

Liszt: Transcriptions / Jean-Yves Thibaudet
Thibaudet's recital contains nine of Liszt's bravura transcriptions and quite a trove it is, superlatively played.

Busoni: Works For Piano And Orchestra / Grante, Zuccarini

Bononcini: Griselda Highlights; Graun: Montezuma Highlights / Joan Sutherland
The return of a rarity! Joan Sutherland is in her prime as she shines in these extended excerpts from two largely forgotten operas. (2 CDs)

J. C. Bach: Six Favorite Overtures / Hogwood, AAM
Not to be missed. This is inspiriting music, beautifully proportioned and written with great verve and adroitness, with the present performances doing them splendid justice.

Telemann: Wind Concertos / Goebel, Musica Antiqua Köln
Colorfully imaginative and stylistically authoritative performances — the nuances of texture, the rhythmic vitality and the expressive qualities of these concertos are robustly, even at times earthily realized by this talented ensemble.

Lili Boulanger: Du fond de l'abime, Psalms 24 & 129 / Markevitch, Menuhin, Curzon
Lili Boulanger's bold harmonic thought and gripping emotional intensity are given obvious commitment by Markevitch.

Verdi: Falstaff / Bernstein, Fischer-Dieskau, Vienna PO
Bernstein's interpretation approaches Toscanini's in vitality, rhythmic drive and delicacy, while F ischer-Dieskau's Falstaff is a miracle of art concealing art. (2 CDs)
