ArkivMusic Newsletter

Dear ArkivMusic Customer,

Thousands of classical CDs have been reissued by ArkivMusic, including many rare and collectible recordings. The ArkivCD program fulfills an important part of ArkivMusic's mission to be the source for classical music, and we are fortunate to have so many label partners who entrust us with their out-of-print releases.

This month, we highlight this enormous catalog of music – every ArkivCD is on sale during the month of April. Here are just a few recommended choices from our list of featured titles:

Matrix 24 - Toch, Hindemith, Martin: Symphonies / Steinberg
A sensational performance of Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie Concertante... by far the work’s finest recorded performance. Stokowski delivers a stunning rendition from start to finish, one in which every note is crystal clear... and the 1958 stereo sonics are truly remarkable.

Rachmaninov: Aleko Suite, Hovhaness: Ukiyo, Floating World / Kostelanetz
Kostelanetz conducts his orchestra in an exotic and delightful suite from the opera Aleko by Rachmaninov, the serene "Dawn on the Moscow River" from Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina and Ukiyo by Hovhaness with its whirlwind crescendos!

Mozart: Early Symphonies / Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wien
This set gives you plenty of music to enjoy, and all of the early Mozart that many listeners will ever need. (2 CDs)

Bach: Cello Suites / Nathaniel Rosen
Collector's Item! Nathaniel Rosen’s Bach cello suites combine elegance of articulation with an imaginative flair that blows the scholarly dust off these pieces. (2 CDs)

Copland, Menotti: Piano Concertos / Wild, Copland, Mester
The slow movement of the Menotti Concerto is nine minutes of gorgeous, melancholy song, and Earl Wild turns in a marvelous performance.

Strauss: Don Quixote, Horn Concerto No 1, Don Juan / Fournier, Bloom, Szell
Just how masterly Szell was as a Straussian is demonstrated, with a combination of opulence and urgency, in all three of the items presented here.

Bach: Partitas & Sonatas BWV 1001-1006 / Sigiswald Kuijken
This groundbreaking album burst on the scene in 1983. These are performances of tremendous love and passion, Bach breaking through the glass ceiling of academia and speaking to us across the centuries.

Paul Jacobs Plays Blues, Ballads & Rags - Copland, Rzewski, Bolcom
A classic record that shows us composers making formal use of jazz and blues, with superlative playing from Paul Jacobs.

An Evening With The Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra
Capture the enchantment of a lovely spring evening at the Hollywood Bowl with this set of light classics featuring Felix Slatkin, Carmen Dragon, Alfred Newman, and more. (5 CDs)

Fascinatin' Rhythm / Alan Feinberg
There is some simply stunning playing on this CD. The sheer speed and panache of "Kitten on the Keys" would have left the best novelty pianists of the 1920s and 1930s simply gasping.

Tango Sensations / Alban Berg Quartet
The Alban Berg Quartet takes on the tango, with music of Piazzolla and his predecessors.

Beethoven, Haydn: Piano Concertos / Argerich, London Sinfonietta
Argerich plays and conducts the Beethoven with a lissom drive, rhythmic verve and incision in the outer movements, and a penetrating stillness and beauty of tone in the slow movement.
