I cannot imagine anybody not enjoying this ballet score — it is so vital, so brilliant, yet also with such beautiful quieter music. It demands virtuoso playing, and that it gets on this record, vividly recorded.
Trevor Pinnock's playing will have any perceptive listener eagerly sitting on the edge of his chair and demanding more: its bubbling vitality gives the set a cheerful, light-hearted character that is altogether unusual.
In this performance, Fischer-Dieskau recaptures some of the freshness which marked his earliest encounters with the cycle. If that kind of innocence must fade with interpretative experience, so it can only be recaptured by the truly mature artist.
