I've had many of these numbers on an LP record = I'm delighted to have these fine works on a CD! F. Vandervoort Report Abuse

I had great hopes that this set would include the Pastoral Symphony of Beethoven, still the best recording ever made for my money of that very popular work! Report Abuse

I remember Hermann Scherchen from his Westminster LPs, on which he was always intresting and at times inspired. I disagree with the reader's glowing estimate of Helmut Krebs, an unsteady tenor who was the weakest link on Bach recordings by DG Archiv and other labels. Report Abuse

Mr Howell, I can't thank you enough for your tribute to Scherchen. I still have some of Westminster's Bach, and wouldn't trade them for later versions. The soloists are wonderful, especially the great Helmut Krebs (many selections are available on youtube). Scherchen also recorded The Messiah twice. I especially love his earlier recording with reduced forces (which I have lost through a bad loan). Here's another vote for a Scherchen revival, and a complete re-issue of the Westminster catalogue.
