The Swedish soprano, Birgit Nilsson, was one of the finest Wagnerian singers of the 20th century. Nilsson's interpretations of such great Wagner roles as Brünnhilde in 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' and Isolde in 'Tristan und Isolde' are legendary, and set a standard that has never been equaled. However, Nilsson was much more than a Wagner specialist, and this recording showcases her in opera arias by Mozart, Beethoven, Weber and Verdi. Nilsson sings Donna Anna's "Or sai chi l'onore" from Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' with just the right blend of grandly scaled rage and heartfelt tenderness. Beethoven's show-stopping aria, "Abscheulicher, wo eilst du hin?" from 'Fidelio,' receives a heroic performance from Nilsson. Of course, Nilsson was also capable of presenting the more gentle side of an operatic heroine. She sings the melodic "Pace, pace mio dio" from Verdi's 'La Forza del Destino' with a honeyed vocal tone and tremendous emotion. This is an ideal recording to introduce new listeners to Nilsson's glorious voice. The recording also offers an opportunity for those already familiar with her work to hear her perform repertoire with which she was not usually associated. |
