Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Running the gamut from giddy frivolity to deeply felt melancholy--and spanning his career from 1918 to 1962--Francis Poulenc's chamber music makes for a program varied in mood and color but marked throughout by the composer's distinctive personality. In commemoration of Poulenc's centenary, the members of the Nash Ensemble have come together in various permutations to record his complete chamber works. Besides the well-known Sonatas, Sextet and Trio, the music ranges from early Stravinsky-inspired wind pieces to charming miniatures for guitar and piccolo.
Poulenc often turned to chamber music when writing in a mournful vein. In addition to the somber Élégie for horn, in memory of Dennis Brain, three of the sonatas express grief, anger and fond remembrance on the deaths of fellow artists: Prokofiev (Oboe Sonata), Honegger (Clarinet Sonata) and the writer Federico Garcia Lorca (Violin Sonata). Poulenc had an affinity for the bright, even strident sounds of woodwind instruments, which are featured in the majority of the works here, and his keyboard expertise is evident in the demanding piano accompaniments, performed enthusiastically by Ian Brown throughout the program. The performers make a strong case for Poulenc's greater and lesser works alike in a collection that attests to his stature as a major contributor to 20th-century music.
REVIEWS:
American Record Guide (5-6/00, pp.167-68) - Recommended.
International Record Review (3/00, p.77) - "...The Nash Ensemble has long been one of Europe's most admired groups, not just for its virtuosity but also for the impression of genuine enjoyment that it conveys..."
