Pierre Cochereau's reputation as a forceful, passionate interpreter of French Romantic organ music was arguably eclipsed by his remarkable improvisational gifts. During his tenure as Organiste Titulaire at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, Cochereau allowed all of his liturgical and concert improvisations to be taped "in house". Some of these recordings gained commercial release, while others circulated in private. The present recital surveys different aspects of Cochereau's extemporaneous art, from variations on "Adeste Fideles" and "La Marsellaise" to a remarkably inventive four-movement symphony stemming from a 1956 Boston recital.

Jeremy Filsell painstakingly transcribed these improvisations note-for-note and plays them with all the rhythmic drive and paragraphic sweep heard in Cochereau's own playing. More importantly, this disc reveals how well pure, unfettered Cochereau retains its vitality and inspiration channeled through Filsell's less freewheeling, more Apollonian temperament. The organ of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral may not match the Notre-Dame instrument's opulence, yet it serves the music as much as Filsell's recreations do. It's obvious that this project was a labor of love on Filsell's part, and he deserves all the kudos he can muster.
