Notes and Editorial Reviews

When I reviewed Vol. 2 of Martin's Gottschalk set (10/94), 1 ended by suggesting a Vol. 3. Seldom has a request been so richly rewarded. Vol. 1 (9/91) drew attention to Martin's real sympathy for the Gottschalk idiom but in assessing the subsequent CD reissue of List's historic late-1950s LPs, I wavered in my support of Martin. His second CD changed that and this third one must make Martin the pre-eminent Gottschalk interpreter of the 1980s and 1990s.

That is exciting news for anyone who enjoys romantic piano music. It is not only the playing which gives such satisfaction, but the whole package is stylishly produced — Rousseau on the booklet cover again and fine notes from Jeremy Nicholas. And again the piano sound from the
Read more fastidious Hyperion team is absolutely flawless. Unfortunately for List, this puts his historic, thin sound well behind.

Martin, operating in a context where some pianists can hardly play softly at all, has a really ravishing pianissimo. This makes 0 ma charmante and the perennial — but highly original — The last hope simply enchanting. Gottschalk is a real melodist. Martin understands the intimacies of the salon but he also lacks nothing in his transcendental virtuosity. The more flamboyant numbers, such as Tournament Galop prove this.

About ten years after Gottschalk's death in 1869, his pianist colleague, Artur Napolea-o, made a piano arrangement of the first movement of Symphony No. 1 (Night in the tropics) which Martin includes here. It is slightly drab compared with the orchestral version and soon feels repetitive. But don't let that put you off this outstanding continuation of the Gottschalk series — and don't forget to buy the other two volumes.
