Notes and Editorial Reviews

A satisfying and varied recital from a thoughtful young artist.

Christine Rice has chosen a challenging programme seconded throughout by Roger Vignoles's well-known comprehension of so many different idioms. That Rice knows what she is about is confirmed by her 'Artist's note' in the booklet, which shows her intelligent understanding of this repertoire.

From her performances in opera, we know that she has a rich, full-toned, quite individual mezzo, one always used with innate musicality. These excellent qualities are brought to bear in all she does here, beginning with a consummate display of Handelian singing, by turns expressive, forceful and technically accomplished, her thoughtful decorations adding to
Read more the favourable impression. She enters fully into the impassioned mood of Brahms's Gypsy Songs, especially successful in the melancholy of 'Kommt dir manchmal in der Sinn'. She describes Wolf's Lieder as 'utterly wonderful' and sings her Morike selection with understanding; but I felt here, as elsewhere, that she needs to vary her tonal gradations while painting her words in a more detailed fashion by giving consonants a bolder emphasis.

In her Duparc group her voluptuous voice is entirely appropriate and, although again I wanted more nuance in her phrasing, she finds all the longing in those two masterpieces La vie anterieure and L'invitation au voyage. Here, as ever, Vignoles's fluent, fluid playing is an inestimable advantage.

Even in her own tongue for Howells's Op 22 and the hauntingly beautiful King David, Rice's diction could be more incisive. This, though, is a recital of promise and already considerable achievement. Texts and translations are sorely missed.
