Daniel Harding conducts one of the most popular pieces of the classical canon: Carl Orff's cantata, Carmina Burana, a composition that continually attracts an audience both inside and outside of classical music. The superb trio of vocal soloists are soprano Patricia Petibon, tenor Hans-Werner Bunz, and baritone Christian Gerhaher.
“***** [I]t's the tremendous punch and crispness of the chorus and orchestra (the brass and percussion are on fire) that makes this version outstanding, aided and abetted by DG's superb engineering.” – Classic FM Magazine
The chorus and orchestra are key contributors, delivering their parts with compelling energy and control… [T]he eagle-eared will spot some unusual interpretativeRead more touches, such as the curtailed pauses in "Ecce gratum"… Gerhaher is superb as the Abbas Cucaiensis.
– Gramophone [11/2010]
Overall this is a Carmina Burana for those convinced that the work is irredeemably vulgar: Harding finds a wider range of color and refinement than almost any other conductor.

OK but no prizeSeptember 15, 2015By David K. (Beverly Hills, MI)See All My Reviews"Not much can go wrong with this work but there are better versions. Stokowski and Wand, for example. If the goal is to collect a wide variety of versions, it might be useful but it is in no way remarkable."Report Abuse
An Audiophile's Carmina BuranaAugust 25, 2015By owen r. (lakewood, CA)See All My Reviews"I've never known quite what to make of this work. Perhaps that is because, with a few exceptions, I am not a fan of the vocal arts. Also, at times, this piece seems a bit drawn out to me. Maybe too much of a good thing. In any case this CD is slated to replace the other one I have. This recording provides an engaging fantasy sound world of Orff's ''catchy'' tunes. The orchestra and choir provide a rhapsodic and propulsive performance that is bound to send the audiophile into an estatic state of bliss. I notice that since ordering this CD it is now listed as unavailable. This is unfortunate because it is a unique performance and recording. Worth hunting down!"Report Abuse
