Notes and Editorial Reviews

Gulda's poised phrasing of the slow movement of K 466 is matched in its sense of style by Abbado's ethereal strings. A splendid record which will afford much satisfaction.

...I also enjoyed very much the distinguished coupling of two of Mozart's greatest piano concertos, K466 and K467 by Friedrich Gulda in a genuine symbiosis with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Claudio Abbado. Coincident with the original release of this coupling in 1975, these artists appeared on a BBC TV rehearsal programme, which was very illuminating. Conductor, pianist and orchestra were undoubtedly inspired by the occasion. Abbado creates a remarkably different atmosphere at the opening of each work, K466 evocatively dark in
Read more feeling, K467 more outgoing, yet neither outside the boundaries of Mozartian sensibility. There are similar contrasts in the character of the finales, with the Rondo of K467 delightfully jocular. Gulda's poised phrasing of the famous slow movement melody of K466 is matched in its sense of style by Abbado's ethereal strings in the lovely and justly famous cantilena of the Andante of K467. Gulda use a Bösendorfer and its crisp, clear timbre is strongly characterized by the remastered recording, which has firmed out the orchestral sound at both ends of the spectrum without losing its depth, even if the violins are perhaps a shade harder in their upper focus than before. In short, this is a splendid record which will afford much satisfaction.
