Notes and Editorial Reviews

Nikolai Lugansky has been at least well known since he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994. He's an ambitious musician who plays, it is said, 30 concertos (about 28 more than does Van Cliburn). He can also be found in his native Russia playing chamber music. According to the notes provided here he has recently recorded an early piece by Benjamin Britten. He seems more than a prizewinner with a huge technique, although he has such a technique, and chose the now common method of arriving at a career. His Chopin is bold, technically brilliant, and often touching. I admire the elegance as well as the dash of his Étude op. 25/6, an allegro. He makes the rapid background flow like water, and in an understated way, less Read more pointed than Pollini, for example, he keeps the melody afloat. On the other hand, I prefer the quirkiness with which Pollini plays the previous étude. Lugansky seems to smooth some moments over. Not all. Every Chopin fan will welcome the power and sensitivity with which Lugansky plays the very first piece of op. 10, the mincing charm of his Étude in A Minor, and the sober lyricism of the famous ensuing piece in E. Just as welcome are the three Nouvelles Études included here. This is a brilliant recording by a still young pianist.
