Notes and Editorial Reviews

Once you've recorded what is arguably the definitive recording of a work, what reason could there be to record it again? Thomas Hampson's 'Kindertotenlieder' and 'Rückert Lieder' with Wolfram Rieger raise this very question, as Hampson's recording of these same songs (plus the 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen') with Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic are regarded as a triumph--the recording to own.
The readings with Bernstein are longer, from a few seconds to more than a minute. This is no doubt due in part to the greater sustaining capacity of the orchestra, which allows for greater breadth and more flexible use of time. The uniquely Mahlerian sound of the orchestra cannot be captured by a single piano, yet the songs were
Read more conceived first in their piano versions, and Mahler himself performed the songs both as pianist and conductor.
The performances on the present disc cast Mahler's settings of Friedrich Rückert--the 'Kindertotenlieder' in particular--in an unfamiliar yet pleasant light. The piano-accompanied settings are a supplement to the orchestral ones, not a replacement. "Der Einsame in Herbst" also appears with an unfamiliar accompaniment, exposing the debt of 'Das Lied von der Erde' to Mahler's earlier song settings. Read less
