Let’s see... a young, virtuosic pianist, a now-grown prodigy born of Polish and Hungarian parents. Guess it’s a coin toss as to what repertoire you might first want to hear him play. As it turns out, for his first recording on the EMI label, he’s turned to the great Polish master Frederic Chopin. As it turns out, he’s ideally suited to the sweet subtleties of Chopin’s writing, and brings to them the translucence that distinguished his earlier recordings of Bach and Mozart.
The album opens with a smattering of Mazurkas, the gentle ethnic dance form that was elevated to the highest art at the hands of Chopin. Anderszewski’s playing of them is delicately refulgent, almost dreamy. The Ballades show an equal liquid brilliance and a skill

Lest you think you’re going to fall into the land of quaintness, Anderszewski pulls you back from the edge with a neatly incisive reading of the famous “Heroic” Polonaise, then gently sets you down with quiet melancholy of another mazurka, this one in f minor. This is mature and powerful artistry from a pianist whose star is most certainly rising.
