Notes and Editorial Reviews

Having enjoyed Sebastian Knauer's dapper and vivacious Gershwin recital (released by Glissando), I am not surprised that this young German pianist brings tremendous technical authority and stylish flair to a Copland, Bernstein, and Barber program recorded in 2001 for German Radio. In Copland's Four Piano Blues, notice the pianist's gorgeous lilting swing in the second piece, and how the first piece's rising two-note phrases press on with just the right improvisational urgency. Knauer realizes that Copland means exactly what his tempo modifications state in the Sonata's pillar-like outer movements. Whereas many pianists read the central Vivace as a dusty, machine-like staccato etude, Knauer's gentler, more varied touch is closer to the mark. Read more The lovely, lyrical Bernstein and Barber short works also receive immaculate, big-hearted, and sensitive performances that do the composers proud. You could imagine richer, more detailed sonics (loud passages are slightly constricted), but this is a minor quibble. Bernstein assistant Craig Urquhart contributes excellent booklet notes to an outstanding, warmly recommended release.

Unique opportunity February 6, 2014 By Norma P. (Richardson, TX) See All My Reviews "It was a pleasure to be able to listen to piano works I rarely have the opportunity to hear, particularly those by Copland and Bernstein, since both are associated, in my experience at least, with orchestral fare. Since I love the music of Barber, particularly his piano solos, I was very glad two of his works, both favorites of mine, were included in this collection." Report Abuse
Not my cup of tea February 6, 2014 By Robert Sanders (Bluemont, VA) See All My Reviews "This is modernist stuff. If you like Balzac and so forth, go for it. Nothing melodious here. Nothing memorable. Like plinking at the keyboard. Not my cup of tea, so I won't comment beyond that." Report Abuse
