Roy Howat is internationally renowned for his expertise in Debussy's piano music, which he knows intimately from the composer's manuscripts and has performed, broadcast and taught worldwide. A former pupil of Vlado Perlemutter, while he was still a student in Paris, Howat played most of Debussy's piano works to the composer's step daughter Dolly de Tinan, benefiting from her precise memories of how her stepfather had played. In musical circles Roy Howat is also well known for his many Debussy discoveries, including an additional Etude of 1915 (recorded on Volume 1 of this series TP94). He has edited most of the music on this disc for the Paris based Complete Debussy Edition of which he is one of the founding editors. This Debussy cycle he is working on for Tall Poppies includes many corrections from Debussy's own pen, as well as from Debussy's own recordings and other authentic sources. "I recommend these CDs for magnificent playing, high quality sound and production values, but perhaps most of all for a revelatory revisionist view of Debussy’s work." Jerry Dubins, FANFARE |
