Boris Pokrovsky’s acclaimed production of Mlada, a story of early Slavs prior to Christian conversion, captures the essence of the Bolshoi’s traditions of drama and realism. It is complemented by Andrei Petrov’s inspired choreography, with its amazing variety of ritual dances. Dancing is indeed the crux of Mlada, which can be best described more as a ballet with a vocal score rather than an opera with dancing.

Opulent production of an unusual opera January 21, 2013 By William H. (Courtenay , BC) See All My Reviews "Rimsky-Korsakov wrote a number of operas, the majority of which are seldom or never performed. Mlada is one of his best and this offering is a glittering showcase of dance and singing with stunning sets depicting ancient Russia.I mention the dancing because this opera is closer to being a ballet than an opera and it features one of Russia's greatest stars,Nina Ananiashvilli, the great prima dancer at her prime depicting both the murdered Mlada and Cleopatra. There is a large cast of both singers and dancers and they do justice to one of Rimsky's most scintilating scores. The tale is convuluted and confusing but stick it out-it's worth it.As is so often the case Kultur has no decent program notes so look up the story on your computer.A winner for Rimsky-Korsakov fans."
