Notes and Editorial Reviews

"These are expressively varied, well considered, and technically assured performances. They miss nothing in all of the almost bipolar shifts of mood of this music—whether the mad-scamp scrambles that follow the “Let’s Be Serious” moments in the First Concerto’s opening movement, or the excellent array of colors and refined phrasing pianist Alexander Melnikov brings to the Second Concerto’s slow movement. Clarity is never sacrificed, though I have to wonder whether it is a matter of conductor Teodor Currentzis’ admittedly considerable sensitivity to his soloist that allows the pianist to come through so cleanly within the orchestra starting at 4:25 in the First Concerto’s allegro moderato, or a subtle bit of audio engineering. I’ve Read more never found Melnikov’s tone so pearly, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s strings have a discipline and suavity that are second to none. If you want Romanticism with a big R in the slow movements and plenty of fixed manic grins and parody-based fun elsewhere, this is as good as it gets."
