Notes and Editorial Reviews

American Tapestry celebrates four composers, Robert Beaser, Aaron Copland, Robert Muczynski and Lowell Liebermann whose musical languages remained distinctly tonal amidst the pervasive compositional climate of mid-20th century American serialism. Each of these composers freely infused their music with popular styles including jazz, folk, pop and musical theater. Remarkable on this recording is the stellar duo playing of Susan Rotholz and Margaret Kampmeier, who combine brilliant instrumental virtuosity with deep understanding of this quintessentially American repertoire.  An important American recital May 27, 2014 By Ralph Graves (Hood, VA) See All My Reviews "The album is titled "American Tapestry," but it's no crazy quilt. The four duos for flute and piano Susan Rotholz and Margaret Kampmeier perform fit nicely together. All are tonal after a fashion, giving the program coherence; and yet each differ in character to give the listener real variety. Rotholz plays with a clear tone that's never out of control. Even when the music takes the flute into the extreme upper register, the sound gets brighter but never shrill. The recording is also well-balanced. Both flute and piano are on par with each other and sitting comfortably in the soundfield; close enough to hear all the detail, without capturing any harshness." Report Abuse
beautiful flute playing May 27, 2014 By daniel m. (elgin, IL) See All My Reviews "This is a beautiful, varied program of some of the best American flute music. Flutist Susan Rotholz is an artist of the highest calibre, blessed not only with a virtuoso technique but also with deep insight into the music. Pianist Margaret Kampmeier is a sensitive and imaginative partner." Report Abuse
