When He Hits the Mark, He REALLY HIts the Mark October 30, 2013 By E. Barnes (Dunn Loring, VA) See All My Reviews "I grew up with so many of these recordings, they are now hard-wired into my brain. In some cases, that's been wonderful, in others I have found over the years that other interpretations beat Walter's easily. He's old school, you see, so his conceptions tend to be at times plodding and massive where a lighter touch can yield a far bigger payoff. His Mozart is positively Teutonically in your face. (A wonderful exception is his Mozart Requiem, surely the go-to recording for wrenching all the considerable beauty out of the score.) His Mahler is well-known because he knew the man, but it too can be beat. (Here the exception is a powerful Resurrection Symphony, a miracle in early stereo.) My favorite among the set is the Schubert 9th Symphony, among the slowest accounts, but that gives it a great power. It's amazing how I can like that recording and also like Toscanini's, so nimble and economical. All by way of saying, just know what you're buying: These are not HIP (Historically Informed Performances) by any means -- no loud timpani, no anemic strings, no runaway breakneck tempos, just the accretions of decades of full-bodied thoughtful approaches to any given score. When it's great, it's unbeatable." Report Abuse
Walter - A Master for the Ages August 20, 2013 By Gregory  W. (Hinckley, OH) See All My Reviews "There's something here for everyone in this collection, and SONY's SBM (Super Bit Mapping) 20-bit technology make these peformances sound as if they were recorded today. The great masters are all here: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Haydn, Mahler, Mozart, Scubert, Schumann, Wagner and more. If you aren't a fan of one or more of these composers Walter may very well win you over. Included is a presentation book on Walter's career, but the photo of Walter standing alongside Toscanini, Kleiber, Klemperer and Furtwangler says it all - a master among masters. Don't pass this one up." Report Abuse
A great piece of history. Itr is a treasure August 10, 2013 By T. Moll (Paxinos, PA) See All My Reviews "This set is about one of the greatest conductors of our life time. The more I listen to it, the more I realize what a treasure. Not too many of them come along." Report Abuse
