Read more /> This is a reissue, sans texts, of Joel Cohen’s Grand Prix du Disque-winning CD recorded in 1987 and issued in 1989. I can’t imagine that a recording of this sort would stand much of a chance of winning that prize in today’s world. The music, though primarily calming plainchant over suspended notes and chords, isn’t exactly Chant, the hit CD that people zoned out to in their cars a few years back.

Much of the music sung or chanted in the Middle Ages on this legend has been lost in history, and much of it exists only as fragments, but Cohen does a remarkable job of creating a sustained narrative through spoken lines and song. Among his sources are Gottfried von Strassburg’s Tristan , written c. 1210; the Old French of Thomas de Bretagne’s Tristann written c. 1170; and music by Conon de Béthune, de Bretagne, Marie de France, and a French-language Tristan manuscript by “Thomas” and anonymous composers that resides in the Vienna State Library. Regardless of whether or not you enjoy such music, its overall feeling of quietude makes this a perfect disc for relaxed and reflective listening. None of this music is in a hurry to present itself or make an impact; its chief virtue, in fact, is its unhurried quality.

Once again, Warner Classics has chosen to omit text and translations from the CD booklet, opting instead to put them online at warnerclassicsandjazz.com/sungtexts.php. Otherwise, a remarkably calm and calming window to a past where the harsh rigors of everyday life were offset by gentle zephyrs of words and music speaking and singing of a legendary love.
