George Whitefield Chadwick was one of the most significant and influential composers in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although best known for his orchestral compositions, he also wrote more than 100 songs for voice and piano in a wide variety of styles. The songs included in this recording, many recorded for the first time, demonstrate Chadwick’s range of styles and subjects. They are creative, playful at times and filled with a distinctive sensitivity and intelligence.
