Notes and Editorial Reviews

A most enjoyable record. The performances are fresh and exhilarating, vital and intelligent; the recording natural and alive, and the music unfailingly delightful and inventive. The Trio for flute, violin and piano and the Promenades were written in Paris just before the war; the Flute Sonata comes from 1945 and the Madrigal Stanzas and Madrigal Sonata are wartime pieces written in 1942 and 1943 – at about the time of the First Symphony. They are both sunny and full of life, betraying none of the turbulence of the times. These artists give consistent pleasure and delight, and are more than a match for the competition on CD. I have never heard the cheeky Scherzo of 1929 played with quite so much character. Perhaps it is curmudgeonly to Read more mention that the English translation of the notes from French is not flawless. We speak of dedicatees not dedicators, trio combinations rather than formations, and both “developed” and “rhythm” are mis-spelt, though I can’t imagine that this matters much. Strongly recommended.
