Notes and Editorial Reviews

Tiefland has never been more than occasionally revived outside German-speaking lands, and it is easy to see why this rather manufactured piece of verismo should be a poor traveller. Yet it sounds remarkably well on this 1957 record, above all through the musicianship of Paul Schoeffler. His performance of the wicked mill-owner Sebastiano is masterly, with an ideal understanding of how to shape the vocal lines expressively. He was a great artist, and this set is a valuable reminder of him. Waldemar Kmentt, Pedro on the only previous set of the work (under Adler on the Society of Participating Artists label), now takes Nando and cedes the other part to Hans Hopf, who is engaging as BL the bumpkin of the earlier scenes and rises splendidly to Read more the final duel. Rudolf Moralt obviously loves and understands the work. Anyone who has a soft spot for Tiefland (and soft, it should be admitted, such a spot must be) will enjoy this fine old set.
