Notes and Editorial Reviews

“The song that breaks forth from my throat is its own reward,” says the singer to the king in Goethe’s poem. Perhaps of all the words Schubert set to music, none of them so perfectly states his own attitude toward his art. This disposition is conveyed as well in the sweet singing of Wolfgang Holzmair, and possibly inclines one to give latitude to some of the technical shortcomings that are heard now and then. There is also the issue of occasional dramatic overstatement from both singer and pianist, as in the above quoted Der Sänger, when the king sounds as if he might have won a war rather than heard a song, and the page, portrayed by rapid scales in the piano, sounds as if he were running for his life rather than delivering a message. Read more Thomas Quasthoff’s and Charles Spencer’s performance on RCA Victor seems more in proportion, more convincingly stated. In the declamatory sections of the works presented here, Holzmair gives more the impression of being a singing actor than a song singer, but in the lyric passages there is something pleasantly reminiscent in style and tone of earlier decades when singers were not so academic, not so accurate, but struck the heart of the song more deftly. Nähe des Geliebten, for example, moves with a grace and simplicity that allow both music and word to speak their own deep truths.

The sonics are a bit overly live, distorting the fortes, and making it difficult to understand the texts from time to time, but this disc still offers much to be listened to with deep attention and respect.
