London's "Entartete Musik" series features music that was suppressed or affected by the Third Reich. The Nazis sought to eradicate any culture that was either too avant-garde or racially impure, and so an entire body of music was essentially banned.
Ignace Strasfogel was forced out of Berlin in 1933 and moved to the United States. The works which he had composed up until this time are the featured items on this compact disc. At that time in his life, Strasfogel was a prominent pianist and composition student of Franz Schreker. His First Piano Sonata (1925) shows the influences of Bach in its counterpoint and the expressive atonality of the Second Viennese School. Despite clashing dissonances, the music has the romanticism of Berg
Read more and (particularly in "Dear Men and Women") the tunefulness of Janácek or Britten. The Second Sonata is playful yet very strict in form, with movements in canon, variation and passacaglia forms.
Kolja Lessing performs these works with virtuosity and panache, and deserves much credit for bringing Strasfogel's neglected music to public attention. Read less
