how to ruin King Roger October 3, 2012
By Renato L Baserga (Ardmore, PA) See All My Reviews
"the music of King Roger is first class, with interesting solos and solid orchestration. The presentation is totally misleading. Instead of the story (in Sicily, about the 12th or 13th century), we have a show where everything is red and gaudy and has no relationship whatsoever to the story it narrates. I guess this is what people do nowadays, but in the case of King Roger it was a terrible mistake. The singers walk around smeared in abumdant blood, brandishing bull's horns and heads. It may be modern, but I like modern versions where the sense of the opera is maintained. This production is awful."
