Notes and Editorial Reviews

There are two recordings that for me encapsulate the spirit and peerless artistry of Pablo Casals, Brahms’s Second Sonata, where the opening launches with heroic abandon and Elgar’s Concerto, a deeply personal reading, charged with a degree of emotion that I am convinced Elgar himself would have celebrated. But those are merely my personal favourites. Others will wave me away with references to Casals’s magnificent version of the Dvorák Concerto, alertly accompanied by a fully fired-up Czech Philharmonic, or the fiercely individualistic versions of the Bach cello suites, idiosyncratic in terms both of rhythm and phrase-shaping, but indelibly memorable, and deeply moving. Four out of the five Beethoven cello sonatas are with pianist Read more Miecyslaw Horszowski (as is the Brahms Second), a symbiotic musical relationship, and there are of course the various recordings by the Thibaud-Cortot-Casals Trio, pinnacles of chamber music on disc, the highlights (for me) are Schubert’s B flat Trio and Schumann’s D minor, the slow movement of which has possibly never received a more eloquent recording since.

Thibaud and Casals also collaborate in Brahms’s Double Concerto under Cortot’s direction, and as an extra gem with orchestra, there’s Bruch’s soulful Kol nidre, sustained at an uncommonly slow tempo. The 1955 tracks include three pieces by Casals’s brother Enriqué and one by Pablo himself, interesting bonuses on a laudable, indeed invaluable enterprise. The sound quality varies, obviously given the range of recording dates and venues, though it’s rarely less than acceptable, but Casals’s giant personality jumps out at you on virtually every track. Unmissable, in the truest sense.
