My Favorite Don Carlo March 31, 2015
By Brian Lowery See All My Reviews
"Too bad all the original SONY recordings are gone, and this opera is only available on a re-recording at a greater cost, but it is still worth every penny. First, it is the five act version, and I believe it makes the love triangle more intense and meaningful. Secondly, Aprile Millo is the best Elizabetta. You can hear her innocence in the first act and gradually hear her become an adult woman at operas end. And of course there is James Levine, who puts together a consistent interpretation of the score. Other conductors get part of the opera right, but lack in the other parts. Levine gets all big moments right. I have many recordings of Don Carlo, but this is my favorite"
