Paray, Ansermet, Beecham, and Gardiner, among others, have given us Chabrier’s wit, bonhomie , sweep, and passion where Plasson spirits up serviceably reliable brio —very enjoyable but far from the ultimate finesse—which is the tradeoff for having it all, including such exquisite rarities as La sulamite and the Ode à la musique . Debussy was an ardent admirer of the latter, but the only competing version—Janine Micheau’s with Jean Fournet conducting—was made in 1952. Similarly, Suzanne Danco’s account of La sulamite , with Ansermet and the Suisse Romande, dates from 1954. The collector may have, or want, those as a matter of course, but there’s something to be said for hearing those pieces in the cleaner, closer, more vibrant sound of these late 1980s recordings, though Barbara Hendricks’s imprecision in attack and diction are shown up by Danco.

The Larghetto for Horn has had several passable recorded performances on CDs, but one might have to go back to Daniel Bourgue’s, with the Monte Carlo Orchestra under Massimo Freccia, on LP Peters International PLE 009, for hand-in-glove warmth lifting this piece from the realm of curiosity into the glow of prime Chabrier. And so on. The orchestral works were issued by EMI in 1987 (749652, Fanfare 12:4), the album of vocal works in 1990 (EMI 75004, Fanfare 14:4). Roger Delage’s annotations for those issues have been dropped in favor of a brief, but penetrating two pages by Emanuel Overbeeke, while texts and translations of the vocal works are dispensed with (though available with arkivmusic.com’s reissue of the vocal album). Companionable. Recommended.
