Notes and Editorial Reviews

As a pianist pure and simple, Ingrid Haebler never disappoints. Her sound is limpid, mellow, each note like a pearl.

...The first six discs are devoted to recordings by that most devoted and painstaking of Mozart players, Ingrid Haebler... [T]he achievement is an impressive one, and the style of her interpretations and the beauty of her tone and phrasing are beyond dispute.

-- Gramophone [6/1979, reviewing the LP box set Philips 6747 380]

----------------------------

This couples a familiar Mozart sonata with one that is much less well known; both are excellently played, and, although this disc first appeared eight years ago, the recorded sound is still fresh. The K533/494 piece
Read more consists of three substantial movements the first two of which, the K533 part, are full of interest, of the unexpected; the Andante in particular achieves a remarkable sort of austere loveliness. The finale, a rondo numbered K494, is not on quite the same level, although its beautiful F minor episode is not easily forgotten. Both here and in the A major Sonata Miss Haebler takes advantage of the modern piano's resources without allowing the result to sound too 'unhistorical': indeed, a good sense of scale, and of tempos, is evident throughout. True, I could have done with a bit more asperity in the left-hand grace notes of the first movement's second variation, but hear how expressively inflected is the third, minore, variation.

-- Gramophone [1/1977, reviewing K 331 and 533]

----------------------------

As a pianist pure and simple, Ingrid Haebler never disappoints. I have always remembered the quality of sound she drew from her instrument when I first heard her at the Wigmore Hall goodness knows how many years ago, and it is still just as beautiful today—limpid, mellow, each note like a pearl. Her line is liquid, her texture transparent, her ornamentation delicate, her phrasing that of a born musician. And she is a stylist into the bargain, never pushing her dynamic range to extremes, never resorting to an over-elastic pulse, never over-pedalling... I recommend K280 in F for a taste of Miss Haebler at her best, and especially her feeling for major-minor contrasts and for chromaticism in its touching F minor Adagio (beautifully proportioned), again in the Presto, which she plays with great spirit —up to time. The Andante amoroso of K281 in B flat and the introductory Adagio of K282 in E flat are also outstanding... Perhaps the most forward-looking of all the expression contained in this album comes in the great Fantasy (K475) and Sonata (K457) in C minor. Here I think Miss Haebler does, for the most part, make you aware of the profound issues at stake—and she does it by a strange, inner mystery and awe rather than by outward Sturm und Drang...

Excellent interpretation in the Sonatas of Mozart November 23, 2012 By Soh Simon (Singapore, Singapore) See All My Reviews "She understood the music of Mozart. Her playing was never too fast and vulgar compared to many modern players of this era. Tempo was always well controlled and articulation superbly clean and even. Subtle nuance without exaggerations. She is my favorite Mozart player. Listen to her K332 especially. Elegant and simple. Just as what the composer intended." Report Abuse
