An exciting performance of an enchanting rarity made near the start of Renée Fleming’s international career.

Rossini’s 1817 opera Armida, composed for his wife to be, Isabella Colbran, is a vocal showpiece even above and beyond the composer’s usual demands. Colbran apparently had a natural contralto voice that eventually gained higher notes as she matured; here more than two octaves, from pianissimo to fortissimo are required, as well as phenomenal agility and great ease with coloratura. The opera has another issue that makes it difficult to cast: six roles are written for tenor and at

This recording was made near the start of Renée Fleming’s international career; she was substituting for another singer at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro. She sails through the role with as much virtuosity as is needed, her sounds is luscious, she pays attention to the text, and she exhibits none of the scooping and other mannerisms that have since become irritating. Brava! She is surrounded by top-flight tenors, particularly Gregory Kunde as her lover, Rinaldo. There are three glorious love duets, a dazzling showpiece aria for Armida near the close of the second act, and a splendid three-tenor trio that boils the blood. A very exciting performance of an enchanting rarity.
