The countertenor voice of David Daniels is a wonder of nature. Within a soprano's range, he sings with rich majesty, and this collection of art songs from throughout Europe takes full advantage of Daniels' unique talent.
Opening with Beethoven's beautiful love song "Adelaide," the album is full of intimate performances. Accompanied by the elegant piano of Martin Katz, Daniels sings with heartfelt passion. Schubert sets the same poem to music in a more reserved and courtly version, and Daniels tailors his performance accordingly. Although his is the only voice, it is a voice as rich as any chorus.
The delicate compositions of Francis Poulenc call for yet another style. "C'est Ainsi Que Tu Es" features Daniels' melancholy crooning. His
Read more touching performances, both the slow and pensive as well as the upbeat and joyous, are one of a kind. Countertenors are rare enough; those of Daniels' talent are a special find.
