Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a magnificent companion to Alicia de Larrocha's previous Granados LPs, of the Goyescas (Decca SXL6785, 12/77 CD 411 958-2DH, to be reviewed shortly) and Danzas espanolas (SXL6980, 3/82). It confirms that this composer's expressive scope was broader than is often supposed. The Seiz piezas are simpler in aim than the other music here, being nationalistic evocations of folk-melodies and of native instruments. They have great and direct vitality, and are dressed in strong primary colours and a wealth of pianistic invention. Rather different is the Allegro de concierto, which demonstrates Granados's skill in handling a fairly conventional version of nineteenth-century virtuoso style. Not a piece with complex ambitions, it still is Read more engaging for its high spirits. To these, as to the considerable executive demands, Larrocha makes a splendid response.

Less immediately accessible are the Escenas romanticas, which are at once very Spanish and highly personal. They are lyrical, sensuous, passionate, yet refined; formal but full of deep feeling. Also, the Escenas romanticas show Granados to have been no mere miniaturist, the sweep and power of the climax, in the penultimate movement, being most impressive. Admittedly the influences of Chopin, Liszt and Schumann are evident, but a notably independent use is made of pianistic procedures which originated with them. Granados's musical thinking here is perfectly suited to the instrument. And Alicia de Larrocha is perfectly in accord with the music. Her authority in such works is extremely well known yet her virtuosity is less often remarked. The Piezas and Escenas contain some very demanding passages, all of which are executed with a smoothness that never detracts from their expressive point. Indeed, this beautifully recorded playing is full of fire, and it sounds even better on CD.
