Notes and Editorial Reviews

All the favourites are here, well ordered and beautifully performed. The programme takes us up to La bonne chanson, completed in 1884, and some from the later years would have given a more complete view of Faure as song-writer, and perhaps of Barbara Hendricks as interpreter; but there is nothing I would want to lose here to make room, and it could be that a second volume is planned.

Hendricks has a clear, high, slender voice, very apt for French songs. Her resources are limited but she makes effective use of them. Thus, in the first song (and the most famous), Apres un reve, she swells in the second verse, calls on sufficient chest tone to deepen the "splendeurs inconnues", rings out with full voice at
Read more "helas", and produces appropriate radiance on the word "radieuse". In the phrase "triste reveil des songes" she also conveys the sense of vulnerable youth which helped to make her performance as Leila in last month's Pecheurs de per/es so attractive. There are certainly times when the songs would benefit from a deeper expressiveness: Prison has all the sense of the calm and beauty which the prisoner observes but not much of the longing which should underlie the cry of "Mon Dieu, la vie est le. Yet the singing is not bland, and in Automne, for example, there is warmth in "oil jadis sourit ma jeunesse" and intensity in the final line, "des vingt ans avaient oubliees". In La bonne chanson a little more body in the middle register would be welcome, but when in the last song the poet tells of "le printemps dans rame" we feel that springtime is in the voice too. In some of the lighter songs such as Nocturne, Le secret and La fee aux chansons she is ideal.

The pianist, Michel Dalberto, matches the soprano's clear tone with his own clean articulation. At special points (such as "tourbillant dans l'extase" in Mandoline) he colours with an impressionist haze, but mostly he favours clarity and a lively contrast of tones. In Clair de lune a slight waywardness in the rhythm distracts attention, but he quickly makes amends, with the left hand so expertly finding its way down into the third verse. Balance is well judged; texts are provided, though without translations.
