Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sharon Isbin has both the temperament and the fingers for this repertoire -- a splendidly played and enjoyable disc.

I have known many scientists whose other passion was for music; the opposite polarities that attract one another are as likely to be found in one human being as in two different ones. On one side of Sharon Isbin's coin is the head of Bach; the obverse shows the colourful music of the 'Latin' countries, and without doubt she has both the temperament and the fingers for it... Sainz de la Maza's Zapateado exudes extrovert energy, whilst the little pieces by Jobim, Villa-Lobos (Sentimental Melody) and Abreu perform the same service for charm; Quejas is in triple time but its pace and sentiment are not typical
Read more of the Venezuelan vals, which in any case owes less to Vienna than to the dances taken to South America by the Spanish conquerors of five centuries ago... Both Isbin and [Eduardo] Fernandez (Decca) reveal the poetic qualities of Brouwer's El Decameron negro (by now 'standard', but not yet over-recorded repertory) and handle the difficulties of the echo passages in the second movement well... [T]his [is] a splendidly played and enjoyable disc...

ONE OF A VERY FEW GREAT WOMAN GUITARISTS December 27, 2012 By Rubin Sunset See All My Reviews "The reason I bought this old album; I wanted an audio CD of Caprichio árabe. Beautifully played, very inspiring. However, on Barrios' Allegro Solemn -- her technical skill is unassailable -- it would take me several lifetimes to play it half as well -- but YIKES!! She ripped through it so fast and so much of the beauty and color of the piece is nearly lost. I'd much prefer Berta Rojas's style for that particular one. Having said that, Sharon Isbin a very fine world class guitarist. She's also a very good teacher -- not all guitarists at her level are. I gather from her Youtube videos that she's a very nice person. We can never have enough of those. Buy her albums! Those folks deserve our support." Report Abuse
