Notes and Editorial Reviews

A well-planned recital of Lieder from a young singer of promise and achievement.

Hitherto Sibylla Rubens has been mainly known for her well-groomed contributions to several discs of Bach cantatas where her pure, keen tone is ideally employed. Here she extends her range and enhances her reputation with an intelligently arranged programme of Lieder, a substantial Schubert group framed by songs by Mozart and by Schubert’s friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner.

The Mozart selection covers territory often traversed by sopranos of Rubens’s kind in the past, such as Rita Streich, and much more recently Christine Schäfer, whose voice and manner hers resembles. The approach is predominantly light and artless yet,
Read more as in the case of those other sopranos’ performances, that does not preclude depth of feeling, as evinced here in Abendempfindung and the song about Luise destroying her letters. Passion is here expressed in the shaping of words and an intensification of tone.

The same happens in Schubert’s marvellous settings of Mignon, D877, his final and most inspired Goethe poems from Wilhelm Meister, where Rubens goes to the heart of the matter. These come at the end of her choice, which has first concentrated on settings of British poets in translation – the three Ellen songs from Scott’s Lady of the Lake, An Silvia and, most plangently sung, the Colly Cibber song about the blind boy, D833. As Ellen, Rubens does not always have quite the weight of voice the first two call for, but sings a poised, unaffected Ave Maria.

After that Hüttenbrenner comes as a bit of an anti-climax. His settings of somewhat indifferent poetry are melodious enough but never surprise one with genius, Schubertian or otherwise. Irwin Gage brings his vast experience to bear on all the music in hand, and gives his singer fine support. The recording is excellent.
