Notes & Reviews Back to Top
John Dowland was a 16th century composer who laid the ground work for both "art song," generations of British Isles folk music and chamber music. His songs are gems of construction, appealing to the "classical" or Early Music ear as well as the listener raised on folk, blues or pop song-forms, wedding chamber music subtlety with heartfelt directness. IN DARKNESS is a unique realization of Dowland's songs, in that they are interpreted by a group consisting of performers from classical and jazz backgrounds. British wind player John Surman has been noted for his unfettered playing, influenced by both Irish and Nordic motifs; here, he achieves a delightful oboe-like tone on soprano saxophone. Surman's bass clarinet adds a gently haunting and 20th century touch to the proceedings. Double-bassist Barry Guy has played with and composed for improvising ensembles large and small--he can wail with abandon, yet his sensitive bowing is perfectly integrated here. Maya Homburger has plays superbly spare, evocative violin, Stephen Stubbs' lute is delicate, subdued and courtly, and the tenor voice of John Potter captures both the tensile strength and the incredible melancholy present in Dowland's songs.
REVIEWS:
New York Times (Publisher) (6/18/00, p.31) - "...[IN DARKNESS LET ME DWELL] is a rarity: a crossover project that is both defensible and listenable...Mr. Potter and company have added new instruments to old in readings balanced between the orthodox and the radical..."
