In his review of the LP of Haydn's cello concertos RG remarked both upon the stunning virtuosity of Christophe Coin and upon the lively accompaniments that ''are not obtrusively 'ancient' in sound''. Yes, I agree with him, though occasionally I noticed that even Coin just fell short of the high standard of executancy which characterizes his performances: I'm thinking particularly of one or two moments where faulty intonation just tarnishes the gilt on the ginger-bread. But there is no doubt at all in my mind that these are readings which discover a vast range of sonorities and nuances of text which more conventionalRead more performances are apt to miss. Some of the tuttis could be crisper in ensemble and tidier in their entries but the playing is sufficiently sympathetic not to have to worry unduly about small details. The recorded sound is excellent and the balance between soloist and ripieno is ideal. Strongly recommended.
