Notes and Editorial Reviews

...Erede in the more dimly recorded mono Decca version provides more élan, in a slimmer, more acute reading [than Alain Lombard on EMI]...

Micheau, Decca's Juliette, sounds uninvolved at the beginning but improves as the work progresses - and, of course, she has the text in her bones. The same is true of Jobin as Romeo. However we may long for more subtle, delicate phrasing and a less strenuous attack, we are consoled by a French timbre that is in itself so right for the role. The support here is even closer to the true tradition in singing Gounod of the previous 50 or so years than it is on the Lombard set, all the singers phrasing with a real feeling for the words - Rehfuss in particular, as Frere Laurent, although he
Read more does lack a low G. In spite of the drawbacks of the dated though still tolerable recording, and an occasional hint of distortion, to my surprise I derived rather more pleasure from this version than the EMI, although the latter must be a safer recommendation given its much more amenable recording.
