MOZART Exsultate, jubilate . Concert arias Lenneke Ruiten (sop); Ed Spanjaard, cond; Concertgebouw CO PENTATONE PTC 5186 376 (SACD: 64:02 Text and Translation)

Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio. Ah, lo previdi. Ah se Read more in ciel, benigne stelle. Vado, ma dove? Oh Dei! Bella mia fiamma, addio. Se ardire e speranza. Chi sà qual sia.

Lenneke Ruiten is a Dutch lyric soprano still in her late 20s, and based on this disc one can predict that she will have a big career. Her approach is clearly informed by the HIP movement, so she sings with less vibrato than one would have heard a generation ago in this repertoire, from singers like Kathleen Battle (who made a lovely disc of Mozart concert arias with André Previn on EMI 85810). Only Exsultate, jubilate and Vorrei spiegarvi overlap from that disc, by the way.

Ruiten has ample technique for florid writing, a lovely pianissimo , and she uses the full dynamic range, including that rarely used area between loud and soft, an area where many singers fail to provide variety. She inflects the music with meaning, conveying the drama behind the texts convincingly. Spanjaard and the reduced Concertgebouw Orchestra seem fully attuned to both Mozart and the soprano, and the result is a disc of cohesive, persuasive, lovingly performed arias. Very few singers can match her combination of vocal beauty, technical skill, and innate musicality.

In addition to the Battle disc noted above, my other favorite Mozart concert aria compilations have very little overlap with this disc. Natalie Dessay (EMI 76856) duplicates only Vorrei spiegarvi , and Christine Schafer (DG 457582) duplicates that aria and Exsultate, jubilate . Francine van der Heijden produced a six-disc box of all the Mozart concert arias on Brilliant, which I have not heard but which was reviewed in Fanfare 31:5 by Joel Kasow. He observed that Heijden has “a voice of limited color that is stretched beyond its abilities.” That is certainly not the case here—and given that the selection of arias here is largely unduplicated on the successful single-disc compilations by the best competition, this can be strongly recommended.

Good, useful notes, naturally balanced recorded sound (as heard in two-channel stereo), and texts and translations set side-by-side complete this highly enjoyable disc.
