Though advertised as a collection of Italian baroque recordings by Chiari Banchini’s Ensemble 415 and Amandine Beyer’s Gli Incogniti, all but one of these albums is by the former. This really doesn’t matter, however. It in fact adds to the value of this seven-CD set, which is available through several U.S. distributors at bargain prices.

Ensemble 415 was founded by baroque violinist and educator Chiara Banchini in 1981 at the Basel-based Schola Cantorum, partially as an exercise in developing appropriate style in this music. They released many records over the years, first for Harmonia Mundi, and later for Zig-Zag Territoires, before disbanding in early 2012. Amandine Beyer, who was a student of Banchini and a member of Ensemble 415, formed Gli Incogniti in 2006 out of colleagues she’d worked with over the years.

Reactions to these performances will largely depend upon how you view Italian ensembles of baroque music in general. Characteristics these two groups share in common with Giovanni Antonini’s Il Giardino Armonico and Fabio Biondi’s Europa Galante include sharply accented rhythms, a flexible approach to phrasing, and strongly contrasted tempos. Ensemble 415 and Gli Incogniti eschew the seemingly endless marcato treatment of the Ars Antiqua Austria’s recent recordings but emphasize passing dissonances, especially in movements (such as the opening of Vivaldi’s “Summer Concerto,” and the finale to Valentini’s Concerto Grosso No. 2) whose angular thematic material creates deliberate tension with the expected harmonic sequences.

Of the music, there should be no concerns. While much of it aside from The Four Seasons isn’t frequently encountered in concert or on records, all of it is excellent; and the Valentini in particular is a gem of high quality, infusing the theatrical flamboyance of the early Baroque with a fugal mastery more common among later baroque composers. To the other side, replacing the liner notes from each of the previous releases with an interview of Banchini and Beyer was probably not a good idea. While those earlier notes were variable in quality, at best they supplied background material on the music, along with—in the case of the The Four Seasons —arguments in favor of a “one to a part” treatment of the works. That little, important fact, among many others, is completely left out of the materials accompanying this box.

But with performances of this quality, in good sound, and in music for the most part poorly represented in the modern recording catalog, that’s a minor consideration. Strongly recommended.
