It is the sheer pleasure of Elizabethan music which emerges from this anthology. There is no anguish, though a little pleasant melancholy, in this selection of madrigals, ballets, court songs, dances for lute and virginals, and various kinds of consort music which makes one almost believe that Queen Bess was Good and that nearly all was right with the world.

The performances confirm this view, all of them good and clean in line and texture. That of Though Amaryllis dance in green is especially attractive, with a clear soprano accompanied by a viol consort in such a way as to enhance the dance rhythms; while the lutenist plays his solos without recourse to that rubato which is a plague on plucked strings.
