Notes and Editorial Reviews

A musical maverick steeped in Viennese music and culture, Mitsuko Uchida is one of the most exciting interpreters of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert on the scene today. This new compilation, tied in to Uchida's upcoming Carnegie Hall concert series, also entitled Perspectives, shows her penchant for music of the Viennese masters up to and including Schoenberg. Her touch in Mozart is crystalline, and the Piano Sonata No 8 included here is pure clarity and light centered around an unbelievably wistful middle movement; ditto for Mozart's Piano Concerto No 20.

It's that same agility that launches the first of the album's two forays outside Vienna: a handful of Debussy etudes, that Uchida tosses off with facile grace. Etude No 6,
Read more "For eight fingers," is a particularly spectacular combination of velocity and legato. When necessary, though, Uchida can dig right into the keyboard; the majestic turgor of the opening chords of Schumann's Carnaval are just about enough to knock anyone's socks off. Again, though, it's the quiet certitude in that light touch that astounds in Papillons, or the earnest Chiarina. Give the Schoenberg a try as well; the Six Little Piano pieces, growing as they do in this collection out of Beethoven Variations and a few Schubert Impromptus (Uchida's specialty), make for an challening and rewarding listen.
