There are few more harrowing journeys in music than 'Die Winterreise,' as poet Wilhelm Mueller's lovelorn protagonist wanders into a frozen wilderness populated only by memory, hallucination, madness and a single human being, the tattered hurdy-gurdy player of the last song. Puzzling as the work's overwhelming pessimism was to many of Schubert's colleagues, it has been long recognized as the greatest of song cycles. Baritone Olaf Bar's performance is distinguished both by beautiful singing and keen insight. Along with veteran accompanist Geoffrey Parsons, he shapes the dramatic contours of the journey, from passion and pain to philosophical reflection and numb repose, with assured mastery, achieving the rare synthesis of literary and musical communication that is the lied singer's art. |
