Definative Beethoven to join the Pack June 22, 2014 By Tony Engleton See All My Reviews "06-22-2014 Here are the "golden boys of the chamber music world with the second of two double CD sets of Beethoven's piano trios, and we start with the Trio in D, the so-called Ghost Trio, his opus 70 #1. Running for just over 23 minutes, it is his 2nd most popular in this genre, behind the Archduke, found on CD #2. These works were recorded between 1979 and 1984, when these 3 great musicians were in their matured prime, and it shows. How many performance of these trios our soloists did, recorded or in concert, is anyone's guess, perhaps 100 or so, but either with each other, as on these CDs, these fine musicians know this material in and out, and on these tracks, they don't sound as if they're "working" but just having fun. But, of course, their in formalness and relaxed nature in these pieces is being recorded for us the listeners. The Ghost, new to me as I bought this set in Feb. 2012, is a wonderful masterpiece of 3 movements, with one of the composer's best Adagios ever, in any form in which he wrote. Filled with darkness and brooding, it is rich and elegantly played, with Ashkenazy particularly sensitive in his key strokes, like the tolling of a funereal bell. And yet, this op. 70, #1, dates approximately from 1808, the time of his great 5TH AND 6TH Symphonies, examples of blazing triumph and pastoral serenity. Beethoven at his most upbeat and optimistic, still the Ghost is a tragic sounding work, perfectly rendered by these men. At no time do we get any sense of a routine take on this or the other works presented. Each bit of music is offered with taste, refinement and that inexhaustible sensitivity from the composer. This twin pack, from EMI, highlights, of course, the trios Ghost and Archduke, but the other lesser know trios and/or fragments of unfinished or truncated, are also given full breath by Perlman, Ashkenazy and Harrell, (P.A.H.). There is also a welcome and refreshing informality to these performances as though the 3 men simply gathered at one of their homes, to "chew the fat," and play some Beethoven. And yet, their attention to detail and the refinement of these pieces is astonishing. Perhaps an unintentional definitive recording as the result. Certainly, the trio of PAH, wished to produce the best that was in them, but they surpassed all expectations, and in grand style, to boot. While the field of great Ghosts, and Archdukes is a fertile one, this 2 CD set from the nice folks at EMI is a contender for top honors, and surely ranks in the best of 5 or 10. Not to be missed, pick up your copy today and enjoy. With the very best wishes, happy listening to all, and God bless you, as well. Tony." Report Abuse
