Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Endellion Quartet's Britten cycle and the Fitzwiliam's account (with Vladimir Ashkenazy) of Shostakovich's Piano Quintet are both outstanding; both are rendered even more desirable by their generous couplings: the Endellion include all of Britten's other published music for quartet, plus the Phantasy for string quintet, the Phantasy oboe quartet and the Elegy for solo viola; the Fitzwilliam add two miniatures for quartet (thus supplementing their complete Shostakovich cycle of some years back) and a stunning performance of the seven Blok songs with Elisabeth Söderstrom as the affectingly expressive soloist.

-- Michael Oliver, Gramophone [12/1987]
