Notes and Editorial Reviews

As musical theater grew in popularity in the United States, the operetta experienced a resurgence of prominence in Vienna. While, as with American musical theater, critics were not always kind, the form's popularity with audiences outweighed the opinions of academics.
The genius behind the new Viennese operetta was Franz Lehar, a former violinist and military-band leader pushed toward composing by his mentor, Dvorak. His popularity was matched only by his prolificacy: The 1930 Christmas season was marked by 500 different Lehar productions playing simultaneously throughout central Europe. His success in capturing genuine emotion in song connected him with an adoring audience.
Additional pieces by Emmerich Kalman and Carl Zeller broaden
Read more the appeal of this Viennese operetta collection. Kalman's "Tanzen möcht' ich," which opens the album, is a festive introduction to a solid body of work by some of today's most popular and accomplished performers. Of particular note is Jose Carreras's "Wie die Blumen im Lenze erblühn." This lovely dance is at once forceful and delicate. Read less
