I heard Abbado's version first and was immediately won over to a work I've had some reservations about. My memories are of performances which tried to purify the piece. Abbado does no such thing, but offers the full range of Neapolitan flavours. Margaret Marshall is magnificent, with a lovely high register which can produce a steely edge followed at once by an effortless bell-like quality. There is a splendid partnership with Terrani—blend is not quite the right word. The element of contrast makes for greater intelligibility.

In the Scimone LP version (Erato/Conifer), Terrani is partnered by Ileana Cotrubas. This produces a somewhat woolly mix which rather goes with the general feel of the performance, competent though it is. Marshall and Terrani really go to town on these doom-laden Italian trills, which Cotrubas and Terrani ride too gently. Besides, Scimone's steering of I Solisti Veneti through the slow music produces many ragged patches. Abbado's direction is commanding and his strings are well-drilled, which makes for better accompaniments. His organ continuo (Leslie Pearson) is quietly present with conciliatory comments, whilst Scimone's harpsichord cannot hide an irreverent chuckle now and then. Most of all, the Abbado record is warm and passionate—and the recording quality is superior, with the CD a good way ahead of an already top quality LP.
